I love the food here. They give really big portions and always lots of cheese. My husband and I have been here multiple times and brought many of our friends and family here and they have all liked it as well. I try a different meal every time I go and have never been let down. We have ALWAYS received great service!

My Fiance and I have now been to this establishment a handful of times because it's the closest Mexican restaurant to our house. Our first visit didn't leave a great impression simply because it took so long to get service. We had the feeling we were handed off a couple of times because it appeared as though servers were starting to get cut and no one seemed to want to take a new table. I'm a server too. I know what it feels like to want to get through side work so you can get on with your life but I was annoyed that the workers were so transparent about it. The food was okay and seeing as how it was a convenient drive to get there we thought it would be worth another shot eventually. The second time we went we were greeted with the same attitude. Our server treated us like we were a burden and we were maybe one of three tables in his section. Again, the food was okay so we chalked it up to maybe this guy had a rough night. We've all been there. The third time we went it was a challenge just to get a table. They weren't busy which was why it was frustrating watching workers walk past us at the front desk without even being acknowledged. Again, our service was sub par and the food was ok. This time we actually brought family with us and I felt that our server was very rude when my mother asked a question about a menu item. He responded to her like she was ignorant and I was deeply offended. Needless to say I no longer had any desire to bring future business to this restaurant. Somehow my Fiance convinced me to give it one more shot. It was not a redeeming experience. The only thing that was different was that our server was actually polite to us however my food was so horrible I had to send it back (something I NEVER do). There was a hair in the dip and the food was incredibly bland and texturally unpalatable. I wish there were any reasons to go there other than the convenient location because we will now be driving across town to frequent a decent Mexican restaurant.

This restaurant is run by gringos. If it's not made by Mexicans... It's shit! I have never been to such a crappy restaurant. It tasted like my mom made it and she is from Salt Lake City Utah. Only rednecks would like this food. I've made better Mexican food than this... I'm really disappointed in the food. I wanted to vomit after the first bite of the burrito I had. PLEASE do NOT go and eat here. You will regret it.... I've never felt so strongly about any restaurant in my life.

  • Dona L.

Honestly, I found the food to be rather drab and ordinary. The food needs pizazz...extremely americanized... If this is the kind of Mexican food a person enjoys, by all means, you will enjoy...I on the other hand, do not!

Has been over ten years since i've been there and will never good back just go to the store and get a pre made frozen fajita's cause that is what it tasted like crap

We went on bogo entree night and $1 dips...holy cow, this place was packed. I'm not sure how the plane theme got incorporated into it, but it's interesting to say the least. We had a large party, so it took about an hour to get sat. I ordered the shrimp quesadillas. The shrimp was big and everything tasted great. The Hab sauce was a white cheese sauce with spinach and was awesome. Everyone ate and had a great time. We'll be back on a night that isn't so packed!

  • David K.

We had a great meal. Everything was as expected and the portions where just right, okay maybe a little big. Service was great as well

  • Michael C.

The service: The member's of our party were served at separate times, we were abandoned after we were finished and had to wait for our waiter to finally come and clear our plates. The waitstaff generally moved with the speed of a glacier. They really weren't that busy so I don't know what the problem was. The food: Very good and almost worth the poor service. Decent portions and certainly up to the standards of what most Americanized Mexican food is. Bottom Line: the food is good, but there are literally hundreds of Tex-Mex places in this city and most of them have better service. Go somewhere else unless you feel like taking a siesta in between visits from your waiter.

Unique decor - SouthWestern style; lots of plants in buckets on the ceiling, and lots of fans Good mild salsa for the chips, very tasty I had the chicken Chimichanga and a Chorizo taco - very good quality food, would come back :-)

Ethically, morally, Biblically, it may be wrong to give any place that serves free and ridiculously addictive tortilla chips anything less than four stars. Just sayin'. Furthermore, this place has a freakin' airplane on the roof and a crazy unique decor on the inside, making it a Lee's Summit, MO original. That said, I went here on a grey Sunday afternoon with a large group. We were seated rather quickly and our server was right on top of everything the whole time. The menu was large and included lunch specials. I asked the waiter what he would recommend for a vegetarian and he immediately suggested the spinach enchiladas. Several baskets of chips and a margarita pitcher held us over as we waited quite awhile for our food. When the food finally did come out, it was yummy - and I am really happy the waiter made the recommendation that he did. One less star than perfect as the wait for our food was really, really long... but other than that, this place will see me again!

  • Don H.

"Is that an airplane on the roof?" Should that thought pop into your head, chances are you're at "Habies" - and the answer is yes! Good Tex/Mex is easy to find in the Kansas City area and you won't be disappointed here either. But it's the "execution" of the restaurant that makes all the difference. For once there is ample parking and even a discreet drive through to make starting out easier. Waiting for a table during peak times is rarely long, and seating in the entry is comfortable and not in the way. Speaking of seating, there are options. Along with tables and booths there is a separate bar area (a great area for a relaxed drink with adults) and (finally) a patio for drinks or meals while enjoying pleasant weather (it's also a smoking area). Service is usually good to very good with helpful and knowable staff. Like i said, it's Tex / Mex and noticeably above the norm in taste, quality, and appropriately sized portions. Prices are reasonable. Needless to say, we're regulars, and rarely miss the specials on Taco Tuesday.

We used to visit Habanero's frequently when we were in the Lees Summit area. As service declined we stopped going there. Last night we tried it again. Our server was outstanding and very attentive, especially since he had two large parties being seated as well. Our favorite habi dip is not what it used to be, it was almost bland. Everyone stated their meal was OK, but nothing outstanding. The Flying tacos (deep fried) must have been sitting as they were already soft and falling apart when they arrived. It would appear they have resolved the service issue, but I don't see us returning for awhile as you can get much higher quality of food elsewhere.

I seem to always come back here for great Mexican. I feel they are a little overpriced but meals are good. Chips use to be better when they were a little greasier. The chipolte flautes are great and good habey dip if you get it on a day you get a crisp shell.

Habanero's, You know the place in Lee's Summit with the airplane on the roof? Well, the daughter and I stopped by for a late lunch; this would be a one way flight. So, it was lunch for two and we were seated immediately at a five top in the front corner, apparently where all the broken tortilla chips had gone to die after they had hit the floor. Maybe they were mad that I was wearing my KC Chief's shirt instead of wearing my KC Royals gear? Anyway, after we sent up a flare, the waiter finally came over to take our order. Keep in mind the place was less than half full. Waiting, waiting, waiting, we finally sent out a search and rescue team for the waiter. Luckily the waiter was located but lunch? Waiting, waiting, waiting, crash. The food was very average and service never made it off of the flight deck. Net result, customers lost. P.S. Notes for next flight crew: sweep the floor and wipe down the tables to increase your bookings.

I've been to Habaneros a ton of times, mostly because of proximity. I don't know anyone who claims Habaneros as their favorite tex-mex, but I don't know anyone who doesn't like it. I've had many of their dishes - my last trip I ordered the calle tacos, which were probably among the best dishes I've had there. The whole beans that came with them are worth a call-out of their own - I could have just eaten an entire bowl of beans. The chips and salsa are good, and I don't remember ever having a bad service experience. Their house margaritas are pretty terrible, however. I'd recommend sticking with beer or maybe trying the top-shelf version.

After having such excellent Mexican food in Knoxville last weekend...this just didn't measure up. It was plain Jane. Haney dip was okay..food was bland. Lack flavor. Need to use more spices.

I haven't been to Habanero's since the weekend we moved into our house in LS, in 2002. At that time I wasn't that impressed. Hubby and I went back tonight for dinner and I was pleasantly surprised in a number of ways. It was Friday night and we had to wait, but not more than 10 minutes. We were seated promptly and were able to get our beverages. Habanero's has a full bar and serves Pepsi products. The Diet Dr. Pepper was well carbonated. I ordered the Loredo (shrimp enchilada plate with a white wine enchilada sauce, rice, and black beans) My plate was served hot and my food plentiful and yummy. I had left overs to take home. My husband ordered the guac tostada plate and the whole plate, including the rice and refried beans were cold. The tostada's were suppose to be cold, but not the rice and beans. Our waitress was wonderful and so was the manager. When hubby pointed out the cold temp on the rice and beans, our waitress took the plate back to the kitchen and a temperature problem was fixed. The manager took care of the problem too. Customer Service deserves 5 stars. We will be back just because we like being treated right. I liked the black beans as they were different than the typical refried and made a nice addition to my meal. The rice was OK, but that was just a side dish. The shrimp enchiladas were wonderful. The shrimp were big and there was lots of yummy cheese and the enchilada sauce was wonderful. There was a enough left over to have over my rice as a left overs. Hubby said his guac tostadas were yummy and he too had left overs for another meal. We left Habanero's with the desire to go back again. Next time I plan to have the Crab enchiladas which on the menu is called the Cancun.

I have to say, I'm no expert on authentic Mexican food, but if that's what you're looking for, this is not the place for that. HOWEVER, if you love good Mexican-American style food, I find the place fantastic. ATMOSPHERE & SERVICE--We started eating there regularly (at least once a week) about a year ago and we've NEVER had a bad server. It is a spacious restaurant and bar with a nice bar area. Plenty of seating that is roomy and easy to maneuver around, which I really appreciate. I don't like feeling claustrophobic. It's atmosphere is well-decorated and casual, but nice and clean and the restrooms have always been clean. Also, this place does not have a bunch of TVs blaring, which I find very appealing. THANK YOU! ABOUT THE FOOD--First, if you go, be sure and order their signature Habey dip. It rocks! It is a white cheese and spinach sauce. It's great with chips, of course, but I order it to use with the chicken flautas, which are fabulous. Real shredded white chicken breast, not dark meat or chunks. Love them! This is very hard to find nowadays. Also, you can order entrees or a la carte. I order one chicken flauta and it's enough for a meal, honestly. My significant other loves the seafood wrapper a la carte and it makes for a VERY affordable meal ($3 - $4 each). With tight budgets these days, we really appreciate that. Also, I normally wouldn't mention the chips, since one might think a chip is a chip. However, once you have their chips, you'll change your mind. They are THE BEST! They are thin and crispy, have great flavor. They never cause me any digestion problems later either... SERVING SIZE--Other items we've tried or we've seen people order all appear to offer large servings. The nachos are enormous. Whenever I've ordered an entree, there is also enough for takehome for a second meal. Because of that, I find their prices very reasonable for what you're getting. DESSERT--We tried the fried ice cream and it's wonderful. Again, it's large, so unless you're a big eater, I'd recommend splitting it.

A nice clean american version of Mexican food. Great margaritas and a nice staff.

This is one of those places where you will definitely have your favorites. Their Habey dip is really really tasty and is a must order for my wife and I when we go. It doesn't compare to the Mexican food you can get on SW Blvd but if you know what to order you can have a great meal. The chicken and chorizo enchiladas are the best thing on the menu and their rice is very good too. They have good fajitas and salsas but the one thing I would stay away from is the tamales. Very bland. We are regulars at Habaneros, you just have to know what to order.

I like Habanero's. It's not off the charts, but they have some tasty stuff. Their servers are always on top of it - I've never had bad service there and we probably dine there about once a month. Their chicken tacos, Habey dip, and the Mexican pizza are my favorites.

We have been going to Habaneros for years. Sometimes it's good, other times it is awful. This time we had the chicken fajitas the chicken was under cooked. We did take out. And the chips they gave us were so stale you couldn't even eat them. They need to be more consistent with their food !

Not sure where my original review went, but we absolutely LOVE Habanero's! Great food! Great staff! Great service!! There's a reason it's been in Lee's Summit for what, 20 years now? Always a full parking lot too. This should tell you something. If it doesn't, then allow me...Go there! You won't be disappointed! :)

I drive past this place 2x a day so I was excited to get to try it last night. We got there about 9:30 and the place was dead - now I know it can be busy since the lot is always full, so may be they get an earlier crowd. Regardless the staff was really friendly and informative about the specials. We got the silver 'ritas since they were on sale and they were really tasty. It's been a long time since I've been happy with margarita so I was already excited about getting to go again. They also have a pitcher special on thur night for about $13 (normally house is $18). The chips were ok, homemade for sure but I like more salt on mine - personal preference. The house salsa was ok/acceptable, not bad just not exciting and we didn't try any of the hot ones, so they may be better. I got the #23 FAJITA CHALUPA'S Tender strips of steak or chicken, grilled onions, green & red peppers, in deep fried flour tortilla shells. Topped with lettuce, cheese, tomato, scallions & sour cream. 11.29 I really liked this one, the steak was well seasoned and not chewy or fatty and the fried rice and soupy black beans were above average - nice and tender even for coming in at the end of the evening. It tasted fresh. Tons of food, I only ate 1 of the chalupas and only about 1/3 of the beans and rice and was very full. My husband got the grande chimichanga (which he gets at every mexican restaurant) and I would put it at above average also. Overall, 5 stars for the margaritas, 5 for service and 4 for the food. It's not authentic mexican, but above average for your middle america mexican food. We will be back!

  • Christine M.

Suburban mexican restaurant, decent decor and consistently average, not exceptional, food. Mostly local families and fine for kids. If you want authentic mexican food, go to Southwest Boulevard downtown, just be careful how far into the 'hood you venture after dark. For a predictable and safe choice in the 'burbs, this one won't disappoint.

Back in the day (and by day I mean 2005-2006), I loved Habanero's. It is where I used to go with my coworker to drink in between shifts at the neighboring restaurant. I was in my early twenties, and had an hour to kill, so why not? Who doesn't love a drunken waitress? We would always order the Habey Dip in the edible tortilla bowl. It's delicious, but then again it is hard to mess up melted cheese and spinach. To accompany our Habey Dip, we would down margaritas. As many as we could fit into the hour break (hour and a half on days when we were feeling especially motivated). If you order a margarita, make sure to get the Propwash. Basically, Propwash is just added alcohol (!). I would always get the Midori, while my friend would have Sangria. Deelish. The problem lies in the fact that the Propwash machine was never working. At least that is what we were told a good majority of the time we would go in. Us: Can we get some Midori Propwash in our margaritas? Habanero's: Umm, actually the Propwash machine is broken today. Us; Again? Habanero's: Umm, yeah. Sorry. Turns out, they were all liars. We learned to ask if the machine was broken before getting our hopes up. One day, our server told us that it is NEVER broken. That's just what they say when they don't feel like turning it on. To sum it all up, Habanero's is good for what it is. Greasy, Americanized "Mexican" food. Both your toddler and grandmother will probably enjoy it, as will the on-the-job alcoholic in you. Don't lie. You know you have one.

Best Mexican restaurant in the Kansas City area, or anywhere I've tried, by far. Haven't been to many anywhere that even came close to being as good as this! The "Crash and Burn" salsa is the best I've found anywhere! We've been to several places in California, Texas. Arizona, and New Mexico and none of their salsas are as good as this on my opinion!

Small business weekend. Habey dip. My partner in crime did the wrappers that she likes and I went for the beef enchiladas and taco, which is a pretty standard selection for me. The daughter wasn't feeling well but we got her some chicken breast strips and a salad. We got sat in the empty half of the restaurant which was fine with me, as I'm never a fan of the din you get when you sit in the crowded part. Neither is the kiddo. Maybe they're related. It was awesome as usual. The dip was out pretty much immediately, and had a little bit of spice to it. Pretty standard cheese dip though. I love the enchilada sauce that they use, and they really lay it down. I realize that it's not terribly "authentic mexican" but it wasn't really what I was going there for. I love me some cheese. The wrappers were a hit on the other side of the table, as we were playing it safe from being here before. I usually avoid the rice, but I like the spice mix that they use in theirs. The Salsa that you get base, if you don't ask for the medium or hot, is more like a tomato sauce with some salsa flavorings in it. I've been on a spice kick lately, but the last time I asked for a hotter salsa here, I think they gave me the "melt your face off" one, cause it destroyed me. This time I made sure to ask for the medium, and it was good. I ended up mixing some from the mild into it to meter it down a little bit for me. Service wasn't a concern, but we were there at an off hour (we do that a lot) eating at just before 4 on a weekend. it was the small business weekend, so we had bogo entrees and dollar dip. We've been doing that a lot lately too, how can being a bit frugal hurt? I've only got it at 4 because frankly, it's not a destination eat for us. Like, we'll go there if we have a coupon or something, but it's not something that I would go out of my way to suggest, despite the food being good. It's not transcendent. Still, I'm certainly a fan.

Habaneros seemed like a busy place, but we were seated in 10 minutes instead of the quoted 15-10 minutes. We weren't elbow to elbow with other patrons when seated near the back of the restaurant. The atmosphere was exciting as far as the cacophony of conversations. We were greeted immediately, and our server approached. She was positive and helped us decide on beverages and meals. She was attentive without getting in the way of the meal. One thing I can't stand is having a mouthful--I swear some servers are taught to do this on purpose--and having a server approach and ask about the meal. All you can do is grunt and nod your head. She provided our check in a timely manner. I felt the food was good, but nothing outstanding. The sauces really made the difference, otherwise the meat lacked some flavor. Not that it was completely bland, but it didn't have much in the way of seasoning. The prices are reasonable and I would go back. One thing to take into consideration is the XX-Hot Salsa. They are not kidding around. I like spicy salsa, but this one really had a kick. If you're a spice-lover/masochist, this salsa is for you. I saved a little for my fajita burrito, and it was great with the creamy Haby sauce. It cut the heat, but still had a lot of flavor.

This has been our go-to place for 7 years. Always count on good service and good food. They offer whole beans which I prefer over refried. Burritos are pretty good portion and can't go wrong with the nachos. They offer "regular" cheese dip or spinach cheese dip called Habey Dip. Three choices of salsa so you surely have an option for the heat you desire (and can stand)! Burrito with rice and beans is $11-13.

It was a pleasant experience from start to finish. The exterior of the building immediately drew my attention, with the airplane on top and the sign with the pepper flying in the airplane where you could take photos. The atmosphere in general felt comfortable. The server was extremely friendly and helpful, and the whole staff seemed to work as a team. The food was good, and there was lots of variety available.

I am a teacher and received an Entertainment Book full of coupons from our PTA, and my husband and I decided to use the one for Habaneros one night. It was buy 2 drinks and an entrée, and receive an entrée for free. We told our server ahead of time about our coupon. Food was pretty good, service was good. When it was time to pay, our server came back with bad news--our coupon was a few days expired (apparently PTA gave us teachers the leftover Entertainment Books because they were about to expire and failed to tell us). Even though they had the same coupon in the current Entertainment Book, management would not honor our barely expired one. We ended up spending nearly $50 on average Mexican food. If that is not in your budget for just a simple night out, do not go here without a coupon!

A typical sanitized, Americanized, cookie-cutter Mexican restaurant. While the menu lacks anything offensively revolting, it also lacks anything amazing or noteworthy. Bland and predictable, the only thing that sets it apart from surrounding restaurants and barns is this goofy airplane on the roof of their establishment, poised as if it's in the process of colliding with the restaurant and burning the place down, killing all those inside. Their menus explain why they originally placed an airplane on their roof, but I didn't really care enough to remember. I think Snoopy shot it down during one of his WWI flashbacks.

A whole bunch from my water aerobics class went to Habanero's Mexican Restaurant for lunch the other day. The staff were very accommodating for our group and the food and service were both just fine. It has been several years since my last visit to Habanero's but based on my Enchilada Plate (two cheese and onion and one spinach) that were served with rice and beans, I was reminded that they offer another very acceptable choice for this Mexican food loving fan. They served a guacamole and chips appetizer that we all shared at the table which was very nice and very large. For my personal taste, I borrowed the salt shaker to add a sprinkle or two to my portion but it was totally enjoyable. The corn chips that come to the table were fresh and crispy and I liked their sauce. Hubby came along and got a burrito which he said was very good and quite large. He was not much of a fan of the accompanying rice. He thought it was too dry and just not to his taste. Another friend at the table insisted that I try a wedge of her steak fajita and I told her I just might get this the next time we visit. It was very good and the steak was tender, not chewy, which was a pleasant surprise. Our server, Jennifer, was both friendly and efficient and made our time at Habanero's most enjoyable. Overall, I would be willing to give this place another try (and that is saying quite a lot, since Mexican food - done right - is one of my favorites).

On our most recent visit our server Ian was wonderful, very attentive and helpful! However, the food has gone w-a-y down hill! We have lived in and around L.S. for our whole lives and used to eat there weekly. They have drastically changed the menu and it just wasn't good. I guess you would say bland. That is sad as it has always been a "go-to" no miss place for me and my family.

You know what I actually like habaneros. Yes it's just another texMex restaurant but its better quality than the others like el maguey . so if you're in the mood for some decent Mexican food this place is worth the visit. The prices are comparable to el maguey and other Chains comparable to this.

Service was good but prices were high for a cookie cutter Mexican place. Served with the standard inadequate amount of tortillas for the fajitas and got charged for more. Too many good Mexican places to waste on this one.

Went here for my daughter's birthday lunch. It was great. We are a big fan of the habey dip! My husband and I both had the fajita chimichangas with steak - very good! I think they could improve their salsa, but it was better than we've had in the past. It had been a while since we visited this restaurant.

I've never had a bad meal here at the home of the flying pepper. The staff is always gracious, helpful, and friendly. The lunch menu is reasonably priced and includes nice sized portions. The combinations actally make sense. The spinach and pepper cheese enchileadas are the best in town. The salsa is above average. For fans of extra hot salsa varieties ask your server for some "Crash & Burn" or "Fire, Fire, Fire." I actually enjoy the gardeny flavor of the "Crash & Burn." As for being "Americanized" or "white people Mexican," that might be true, but the restaurant is in Lee's Summit, not Reynosa, Juarez, or even San Antonio. I'm not sure why anyone would expect an "authentic" meal in the eastern suburbs of Kansas City. The food is good no matter how you characterize it.

7/29/2013 - @5pm - We started with the Guacamole served in a fried tortilla bowl (the bowl bowl was pretty good on its own) and the Chorizo spread. Both were excellent. I ordered the steak, chicken, and shrimp fajitas. They did not come with rice and beans but that was a good thing because I hate throwing food away. The shrimp and chicken were both cooked perfectly while the steak was excellent there were two or three piece where that were ever so slightly tough. As we know when eating steak fajitas you don't wanna have to tug on them to bite through the meat. That was kind of picky I know but I thought worth mentioning. My better half had the #1 platter (cheese & onion enchilada, tamale, beef taco & bean tostada) and this was served with beans and rice. She loved all the offerings but the surprise for her (and me because I polished what she did not finish) was the tamale, it was excellent. Two appetizers and the two entree's left no room for dessert. Overall a great place for the money! We will certainly be back...

Staff is very friendly and helpful. My favorite is their lunch menu. Everything has been very taste. I have also been to several events they have catered. Food was great.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
